The Ascalonian names (sixth, seventh and eight names) are either English, German or French, for the same reason as the others. The Elonian names (last 2 names) are Arabic names.

There are tons of lore from GW1 that ties to humans in a scale incomparable to any other race. The vast majority of lore points or landmarks that relate back to GW1 had significant human influence on it. As someone who felt heavily invested in the characters and the lore from GW1, making human as my first character was an easy choice to make.
